Amid widespread poverty and widespread unemployment, a number of female bakers in Kabul say the Taliban have closed their bakeries without prior warning.
According to them, the presence of men, the covering of some female customers, and accusations of “not wearing the hijab” were among the reasons for stopping their work.
These women had started a bakery with little capital and amidst a mountain of difficulties, but now even that morsel of bread has been lost.
Many say that with the closure of these bakeries, their livelihoods and even the lives of their families have been put at risk.
One of these women says that with such restrictions, the Taliban have not only taken away work but also human dignity from people.
