Kabul – The publication of photos of the graduation ceremony of former Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s children on his official Facebook page has had a wide impact on social media. In the photos, for the first time in years, Zeenat Karzai, Mr. Karzai’s wife, is also seen at a public gathering.
In the caption accompanying the post, Mr. Karzai expressed his delight at the graduation of his son, Mirwais, from high school, and also announced that his daughter, Malalai, has also completed primary school.
He went on to express his hope that his daughter and other Afghan girls will be able to continue their education until the end of secondary school, inside the country—a wish that, in the current restrictive conditions for girls’ education, has a meaning beyond a family message.
Although Karzai did not directly address the current situation in the country in this post, the public release of his wife’s photo in the current Afghan environment, with severe restrictions on women’s social presence, has been interpreted by many as an implicit and meaningful message.
The former president, who has repeatedly emphasized the need to support girls’ education in recent years, also emphasizes in this message the provision of equal educational opportunities for all Afghan children.
