KABUL – The Taliban’s Ministry of Public Works has announced that the Salang Highway, one of the country’s most important transit routes, will be closed to trucks after Eid al-Adha for reconstruction work.
The restriction will begin on 2025 June 10 and will include all heavy trucks, according to the ministry’s spokesman, Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas.
However, light vehicles, traders and drivers will be able to travel north to south and vice versa on a rotational basis, according to the Ministry of Public Works announcement.
Passenger vehicles of types 580, 303 and 404 have also been allowed to travel on the secondary route 24 hours a day.
Despite previous reconstruction efforts, the Salang Highway remains a challenging route for drivers and passengers; the mountainous route, natural erosion and heavy traffic load have made this highway one of the most accident-prone routes in the country.
