Following unprecedented Israeli airstrikes on Iranian soil, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting at Tehran’s official request.
According to Reuters, the meeting will be held in the late hours of Friday night, New York time.
Iranian sources say that in the attacks, which began on Friday morning, more than 100 Iranian military and nuclear targets, including missile bases, military commanders’ residences and centers related to the nuclear program, were targeted by about 200 Israeli fighter jets.
An Israeli military spokesman reported that 330 different types of munitions were used in the operation.
At least four senior commanders of the Revolutionary Guard Corps and six Iranian nuclear scientists were killed in the attacks.
Iran responded by launching more than 100 drones at Israel, but Israeli sources claim that most of them were intercepted.
Iran has denied this claim and promised a “regrettable” response.
Following the attacks, severe and continuous explosions were reported in areas west of Tehran, including Shahriar, Mallard, Chitgar and near the Parchin base.
The exact source of the explosions has not yet been determined.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi has called on the Security Council to condemn Israel and take deterrent measures.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz has warned that any retaliatory action by Iran will be met with a harsher response.
US President Donald Trump also said in response to the recent developments: “Some of the Iranian extremists who were threatening are now dead. Iran must either agree or face harsher consequences.”
Ayatollah Khamenei said in a message: “The Zionist regime has prepared for itself a bitter and painful fate with this crime and it will definitely receive it.
