Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of supporting peace and reconstruction in Afghanistan at the China-Central Asia Summit.
The summit was held on Tuesday in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, and one of its main themes was to review the situation in Afghanistan.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the country’s president called for greater coordination among regional countries to help Afghanistan on the path to peace, stability and development. According to the statement, Xi Jinping said: “We must strive to help Afghanistan strengthen its development capabilities and achieve a stable future.”
He also stressed the need to jointly fight terrorism and extremism in the region.
Central Asian leaders have also expressed concern about security threats in Afghanistan and called for effective confrontation with terrorist groups in the country.
Although China has not officially recognized the Taliban, it has established close relations with the group and plays an active role in regional meetings related to Afghanistan.
