UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his quarterly report on the situation in Afghanistan, once again warned about the Taliban’s actions, saying that the group’s restrictive policies have worsened the humanitarian crisis in the country.
Guterres stressed that the UN is trying to chart a clear political path for the country’s future with the participation of the Afghan people, Taliban officials and the international community; but he stressed that to overcome key crises, especially in the areas of human rights and women’s rights, simultaneous domestic and international cooperation is vital—a process that will require time, consensus and commitment to internationally accepted principles.
The UN Secretary-General warned that the Taliban’s implementation of the “Enjoining Right and Forbidding Wrong” law not only violates the fundamental freedoms of citizens on a large scale, but has also become a serious obstacle to Afghanistan’s return to the global system.
Guterres also strongly criticized the deprivation of girls from education, saying that Afghanistan is the only country in the world that still systematically prevents girls from getting an education. He called for the immediate lifting of this ban.
