Lavrov meets Kim Jong-un in the light of strengthening Moscow-Pyongyang relations

The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that Sergey Lavrov, the country’s Foreign Minister, met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the port city of Wonsan on Saturday, July 11. The meeting took place during Lavrov’s official visit to North Korea.

A video of the meeting was posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s official channel, but no details of the discussions have been released yet.

Lavrov had previously described the relationship between the two countries as “invincible brotherhood” during a meeting with his Korean counterpart, a term seen as a sign of the growing rapprochement between Moscow and Pyongyang in the wake of the Ukraine war.

North Korea has reportedly deployed thousands of troops to support Russia’s war in Ukraine, a move that has raised international concerns about the expansion of new military axes.

After the trip, Lavrov will travel to China to attend a meeting of foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
