In the shadow of the Taliban’s lack of accountability; targeted killing of a young man in Takhar.

Continuing the increasing trend of targeted killings and unorganized crimes in various provinces of Afghanistan, local sources in Takhar province have confirmed that last night, unknown individuals killed a citizen in the Rustaq district of the province.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening, July 20, in the Ibrahim Khalil Mosque area of the Rustaq district, and the victim, Ahmad Rashid, was stabbed to death by attackers. The motive and perpetrators of this crime have not yet been determined, and as of the time of this report, no individual or group has claimed responsibility.

Despite the Taliban’s complete control over the military and security structures, local officials have yet to comment on the incident. The unprecedented increase in criminal activity and mysterious killings in Takhar, Badakhshan, Kabul and other provinces is in stark contrast to the Taliban’s repeated claims of “establishing nationwide security” in the country.

In the most recent similar incident, local sources reported that unidentified individuals shot dead four young men in Arghistan district of Badakhshan province, an incident that once again raises serious questions about the Taliban’s ability and willingness to ensure the safety of civilians.

Analysts believe that many of these crimes are either committed with the connivance of Taliban forces or directly by elements affiliated with the group, who carry out targeted operations in informal clothing and under cover of anonymity.

The continuation of such trends in the absence of free media, oversight bodies, and impartial courts is a serious alarm for the security and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, especially in remote areas.
