Increase in suicides among women; a 28-year-old woman in Ghor ended her life.
In a worrying wave of suicides among Afghan women, local sources in Ghor province have reported that a 28-year-old woman in Lal Wasar Jangal district has taken her own life.
The incident took place on Thursday, July 31, in the village of “Koshk Payin” and, according to sources, the young woman committed suicide at home using a rope after her husband left. She was a mother of three children.
Although the exact motive for the act is still unclear, there has been no official response or investigation by local Taliban officials.
Women’s rights experts and activists have warned that the increase in suicides among women in provinces such as Ghor, Bamyan, Faryab and Badakhshan is not unrelated to the strict restrictions imposed by the Taliban, poverty, unemployment and domestic violence.
After the Taliban took control of the country, many women were not only deprived of education and work, but also marginalized in the social and political structure; an issue that psychologists cite as a major factor in the increase in psychological stress and suicide attempts among women.
While human rights organizations have warned about the dire psychological situation of women in Afghanistan, government institutions have remained silent.
