Deportation of Afghan refugees in Germany met with reactions from political parties.
Germany continues to emphasize its strict policy on the deportation of Afghan refugees, but the decision has met with strong reactions from domestic political parties.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced on Thursday, 7 August 2025, that the process of returning refugees accused of committing serious crimes, including to Afghanistan, will continue.
Dobrindt described the process as a permanent policy and emphasized that “we managed to organize a flight that returned dangerous criminals to Afghanistan and this measure should not be temporary.”
The Interior Minister also said that border controls have been tightened and will continue after September. He has repeatedly emphasized that the German government’s policy towards people who threaten public security is unchangeable.
However, the Green and Left parties in Germany have strongly condemned the policy. Clara Bonger, the Left Party’s interior affairs spokesperson, called the measures a propaganda stunt that places the burden of problems on the shoulders of disadvantaged communities, adding that deporting migrants to countries with security and human rights crises such as Afghanistan not only does not create better security, but also exacerbates racism and social division.
Green Party spokesperson Marcel Emmerich also criticized the Interior Minister for ignoring court rulings and protests from trade unions and civil society organizations. He emphasized that imposing further restrictions on borders goes against the values of the European Union.
To facilitate the process of returning refugees, the German government has established political relations with the Taliban and accepted representatives of the group in its embassies, a move that has led to much political and legal debate.
This conflict between the government’s security policy and widespread criticism from political parties is an issue that will affect the German political atmosphere in the near future.
The continued policy of expelling Afghan refugees is a major challenge to maintaining a balance between internal security and respect for human rights.
