1,500 unemployed female lawyers and thousands of women imprisoned at home; report on the fourth year of Taliban rule.

Amnesty International UK said on the fourth anniversary of the Taliban’s rule that the rights of the Afghan people have been widely and systematically violated since the group returned to power.

The report said the Taliban had dismantled Afghanistan’s legal system and replaced it with their own strict interpretation of Sharia law.

According to Amnesty International, women and girls have suffered the most and face new restrictions every day.

The organization has documented examples of violence against women, including a woman who was arrested by the Taliban after fleeing her home due to domestic violence and was given 80 lashes for “running away from home.”

A female lawyer in the previous government also said that Taliban courts did not leave space for women’s voices to be heard: “Most women are tried in silence and fear, and no one listens to what they say.”

Amnesty International has previously reported that at least 1,500 female lawyers have lost their jobs since the fall of the previous government, and many have been forced into hiding or fleeing the country.

The warnings come as the Taliban have repeatedly arbitrarily detained young women and girls from markets and alleys in recent months.
