The US government has appointed a new and interim charge d’affaires for Afghanistan.

Karen Decker, the chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Afghanistan, has resigned from her position.

The US Embassy in Qatar announced on Thursday that Dan Brown will serve as the country’s new chargé d’affaires on an interim basis. Decker is retiring after many years of service at the US mission in Afghanistan.

The US embassy noted that after the fall of the previous Afghan government, the country’s diplomatic offices were moved from Kabul to Doha and that American diplomats are now operating from Qatar.

Dan Brown has been serving as the US deputy mission in Afghanistan since November 2023 and has extensive experience in counterterrorism, political-military affairs, and combating transnational and financial crimes.

According to an official biography published by the embassy, Brown also has significant experience in political and economic affairs and previously served as deputy director of the Office of Terrorism, Narcotics, and Crime Analysis at the US Bureau of Intelligence and Research.

His appointment reflects the US focus on diplomatic experience and expertise during this critical period in Afghanistan.
