Explosion of a mortar shell left over from the war kills a child in Maidan Wardak.

An unexploded mortar shell from the war in Chak district of Maidan Wardak province on Saturday, August 23, killed a child and injured four others.

The incident occurred when a number of students were on their way home after school. Local officials say that the condition of some of the injured is critical.

Afghanistan is among the countries that suffers the most victims from mines and munitions left over from the war.

The Red Cross report shows that in 2024 alone, at least 564 people in the country died from such explosions, nearly 80 percent of whom were children.
