15 billion Afghanis worth of worn-out banknotes have been burned in the last four years.

The Central Bank of Afghanistan, under Taliban control, has announced that it has collected and burned about 15 billion Afghanis worth of worn-out banknotes in the past four years.

The institution officially released this statistic on Saturday, October 4, 2025, by posting a video on the X social network.

Central bank officials have urged citizens to be more careful in using and storing banknotes so that the money does not become worn out prematurely.

They also emphasized the development of digital banking and said that the use of ATM cards is one of the institution’s priorities.

This comes at a time when, along with the Taliban leader’s order to cut off fiber-optic internet in parts of the country, banks’ operations and people’s access to banking services have faced serious problems.

The Taliban’s decision to cut off the internet was made with the aim of “preventing evil” and has so far been implemented in several provinces of the country.
