Behind the Scenes of Buzkashi Events in the Northeast: A Taliban-Engineered Strategy.

In recent months, costly and highly competitive buzkashi events have increased across northeastern Afghanistan, particularly in Takhar and Badakhshan provinces.

One such event was the final buzkashi gathering in Faizabad, which drew thousands of spectators and sparked widespread reactions, criticism, and protests.

Local sources say these events are not spontaneous but have been deliberately planned and directed by Taliban leadership circles, particularly by Amir Khan Muttaqi. Muttaqi, who served as Minister of Information and Culture during the Taliban’s first regime and as a battlefield commander in Takhar, is said to have deep knowledge of northern regions and their social sensitivities.

Under Muttaqi’s guidance, the Taliban’s strategy reportedly focuses on shaping public perception and neutralizing anti-Taliban sentiment in Takhar and Badakhshan. By organizing such events, the group seeks to portray the situation as normal and positive, projecting an image of stability and benevolence, despite a vastly different on-the-ground reality.
