Local sources in northeastern Afghanistan report that two Tajik border guards were killed following gunfire originating from Afghan territory.

The incident was confirmed on Wednesday, 24 December 2025 and occurred along the border between the two countries.

According to the sources, Tajik border forces returned fire and killed two armed individuals who had been shooting from the Afghan side toward Tajik territory.

The clash took place along the border between Shahr-e-Buzurg district of Badakhshan province and Chah Ab district of Takhar province.

Another source stated that the Tajik border guards were killed during a confrontation with armed smugglers, and the identities of the attackers have not yet been confirmed.

The incident comes amid previous security breaches along the same border, including the killing of Chinese nationals in Tajikistan following drone attacks and gunfire by armed groups linked to the Taliban.
