Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that he met with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of Afghanistan’s Hezb-e-Islami, during the latter’s medical visit to Malaysia.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Malaysian Prime Minister described the meeting as cordial and stated that Hekmatyar was in Malaysia to receive medical treatment.

He also referred to the encounter as a meeting with “an old friend” and noted that various topics were discussed during their conversation.

Sources close to Hekmatyar previously confirmed that he traveled to Malaysia on December 8, 2025, to pursue medical treatment.

According to these sources, the visit was conducted under diplomatic coordination and upon the formal invitation of the Malaysian Prime Minister, with Hekmatyar’s health condition cited as the main reason for the trip.

Prior to this journey, the Taliban had imposed restrictions on Hekmatyar’s movements, preventing him from leaving Afghanistan for several months and limiting his meetings with foreign delegations, including the Malaysian delegation in Kabul.

Ultimately, following concerns about the political and diplomatic consequences of these restrictions, the Taliban permitted Hekmatyar to travel abroad for medical treatment.
