Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, reacted sharply to the UN Security Council’s extension of the mandate for the Taliban sanctions monitoring team, calling the decision “unjust” and a repetition of “failed past experiences.”

He accused the United Nations of bias, claiming the body is influenced by countries that previously had a military presence in Afghanistan.

Mujahid asserted that Afghanistan now enjoys security and stability, and that continuing such decisions will yield no benefit.

This response followed the Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2816, which extended the mandate of the Taliban sanctions monitoring team for another 12 months and urged all countries to fully implement the measures outlined in Resolution 2255.

These sanctions target the Taliban and individuals, groups, and entities associated with them, which the Security Council says threaten Afghanistan’s peace, stability, and security.

The new decision underscores the international community’s persistent distrust of the Taliban’s performance.

Meanwhile, many Afghan citizens emphasize that the Taliban do not represent the people and that the group’s strict policies have plunged daily life into crisis.

Widespread social and civil restrictions, economic pressures, and the deprivation of women’s basic rights, including education, work, and participation in society, have left a large portion of the population deprived of fundamental human rights.

In such conditions, the Taliban’s claims of “stability” are starkly at odds with the harsh realities faced by millions of citizens.
