Afghan Turk Women’s Movement: Abida was a victim of forced marriage and violence under a regime of force and oppression, a regime that tramples on women’s human rights and dignity.

The Turkish Women’s Movement, protesting the self-immolation of Abida, a daughter of Ghori, under the Taliban regime, has expressed its deep sorrow and anger over this incident and condemned the incident.

They said: “I strongly condemn the heartbreaking and inhumane incident of setting Abida on fire; a girl who became a silent victim of forced marriage and an unjust system that tramples on women’s human rights and dignity.”

According to the movement; this painful incident once again revealed the reality in which Afghan women and girls lose their right to choose, live and freedom amidst injustice, harsh traditions and patriarchal laws.

These women said; As the voice of Turkic women and part of the Afghan women’s advocacy group, we demand immediate accountability for the perpetrators of this crime, an end to the culture of forced marriage, and legal guarantees for the fundamental rights of girls and women.

They have also called on human rights institutions, the international community, and domestic structures to break their silence and take practical steps to stop these tragedies.

Abeda, a 20-year-old girl from Ghori, set herself on fire instead of facing life imprisonment for an unwanted marriage.
