Afghanistan in the shadow of global crises; The Security Council warned about the situation of women.
The UN Security Council’s special session to discuss the situation in Afghanistan began as the Iran-Israel war and regional tensions have darkened the horizon of global attention.
At the meeting, the latest report of the UN Secretary-General was presented by UNAMA; The report reveals the deteriorating humanitarian situation, widespread human rights violations, the suspension of basic projects and, in particular, unprecedented restrictions against women.
Rosa Otunbayeva, the UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, said women continue to fight in silence and inequality, noting that the crisis of Afghan women is gradually being forgotten at the global level.
Sima Bahosh, head of the UN Women’s Organization, called on the Security Council to take a firm stand against the “oppression of 20 million women,” saying: “Afghan women have not surrendered; we must not surrender either.”
Representatives of France, Britain and the United States also expressed concern over the Taliban’s continued restrictions, especially against women, and called for the group to be held accountable in international courts.
Afghanistan’s representative Nasir Fayeq called for the appointment of a UN special envoy to facilitate intra-Afghan dialogue and stressed the participation of women and civil society in the country’s future.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Iranian representative warned that insecurity in the region could lead to the deportation of millions of Afghan refugees from Iran, referring to recent Israeli attacks.
