After Trump’s warning, the Taliban held several emergency meetings in Kandahar.
Local sources have reported that after Donald Trump’s statements about retaking Bagram Air Base, the movement of Taliban leaders to Kandahar has increased significantly.
Over the past few days, most of the group’s cabinet ministers have met with the Taliban leader and have discussed strategies to counter Washington’s pressure in numerous meetings.
Meanwhile, the trip of Taliban Defense Minister Mohammad Yaqub Mujahid to Qatar has also been discussed; Sources say that during this trip, Qatari officials conveyed the US message about Bagram to him.
It was also emphasized in the Kandahar meetings that the United States can use Afghan soil to fight terrorism according to the Doha agreement and that the Taliban will be part of this process.
However, Haibatullah Akhundzada expressed his opposition to the US military presence in all meetings and emphasized political engagement with the international community.
Local sources added that he was warned that if the Taliban did not cooperate with the US, Washington might return to Afghanistan by force once again.
At the same time, the morale of some lower-ranking Taliban members in Kandahar has weakened and several commanders have even considered leaving the country.
Trump has also emphasized that he is in talks to retake Bagram and that not handing it over will have serious consequences. And the Taliban have demanded that the US adhere to the Doha agreement and adopt a realistic solution.
