Allegations of Sexual Assault and Cover-Up: Local Accounts of a Taliban Judge Scandal in Takhar.
Local sources in Warsaj district of Takhar province report that at around 4:00 p.m. on August 6, 2025, Mawlawi Mujib, a member of the district court, was apprehended by local residents in the village of Deh-Payan-e Mian Shahr while allegedly engaging in immoral conduct.
According to the sources, his suspicious and repeated visits to a residential house had raised concerns among neighbors, some of whom recorded videos documenting his movements.
The sources say that after realizing he was being filmed, Mawlawi Mujib immediately contacted the Taliban intelligence department. Intelligence forces reportedly arrived at the scene, detained several local residents, and used violence and threats to force them to delete the recorded videos. The residents were allegedly threatened with death if the incident was disclosed. Out of fear, the community remained silent for several months and only recently shared details of the incident with media outlets.
This case has emerged amid reports of multiple incidents of sexual assault and abuse allegedly committed by Taliban members in Takhar province cases that local sources say have remained hidden due to intimidation, the absence of independent judicial institutions, and lack of access to justice.
Although Mawlawi Mujib was reportedly dismissed from his position following internal fallout within Taliban circles, no legal proceedings have been initiated against him, raising serious questions about the Taliban’s claims of enforcing justice under an “Islamic system.”
