Barmak: Taliban Justify Repression Using the Name of Islam.
Wais Ahmad Barmak, former Afghan Interior Minister, sharply criticized the Taliban during the third annual conference commemorating Commander Khair Mohammad Khairkhwah.
He stated that the group manipulates the name of Islam and religious concepts to impose its policies and demands on the population.
Barmak emphasized that religion should not be used as a tool to justify power grabs or restrict citizens’ rights.
He explained that by presenting an exclusive interpretation of Sharia, the Taliban attempt to legitimize their actions, while these interpretations often contradict the true spirit of Islam, social justice, and human dignity.
The former minister further warned that exploiting religion to silence dissent and eliminate opponents causes severe damage to public religious faith, undermines trust, and alienates society from authentic religious values.
