CHRA: Afghan media and courts have been paralyzed under Taliban rule.
The Center for Human Rights Advocacy (CHRA) in collaboration with Cambridge University Law School has reported that after four years of Taliban rule, Afghanistan’s justice system has severely collapsed and people’s access to justice has been limited.
Previous laws have been abandoned and the Taliban are enforcing their strict interpretation of Islamic law, including public executions, floggings and amputations, violating citizens’ fundamental rights.
According to the report, Taliban judicial officials have replaced previous officials and often lack the necessary legal training and experience.
The current judicial system does not provide for a fair trial, the right to a lawyer and transparency in the judicial process, and many cases have remained without proper consideration.
A similar situation prevails in the media sector. After August 15, 2021, many media outlets have ceased their activities and journalists face threats, intimidation and censorship.
The restrictions have reduced transparency, limited information flow and reduced the ability of civil society to monitor government performance.
