Government indifference, people’s cooperation

Government indifference, people’s cooperation; free transfer of 2,000 migrants from Islam Qala to Herat in 300 private cars.

While the Taliban government was unable to provide the most basic services to migrants expelled from Iran, ordinary citizens of Herat took an unprecedented step by transporting 2,000 migrants from the Islam Qala border to the provincial capital for free.

This movement, launched under the title of “Sympathy and Solidarity Caravan,” includes more than 300 private cars of people and civil activists. On Friday, they took on the responsibility of transporting the helpless migrants without financial support from the government.

Along with these efforts, a number of local businessmen have also rushed to help the migrants by providing water and food. The presence of volunteer women and girls in helping migrant families also shows a sense of collective responsibility in the absence of government management.

Despite the increasing number of refugees expelled from Iran, the Taliban have so far failed to come up with an effective plan or solution to address this humanitarian crisis. This is while the people’s unwavering cooperation has once again highlighted the role of grassroots institutions in the vacuum of government functioning.
