Guterres: Taliban’s ban on women’s activities is “unbearable and foolish.”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described the Taliban’s ban on women’s participation in humanitarian activities in Afghanistan as “unbearable” and “stupid.”
He said at a press conference in New York on Tuesday, September 17, that the current situation in Afghanistan is completely unacceptable.
According to Guterres, the continuation of these restrictions has a serious impact not only on women’s rights, but also on the process of delivering humanitarian assistance to people in need.
He emphasized that depriving women of their role in this field is a major obstacle to effectively providing assistance to vulnerable families and women in Afghanistan.
The UN Secretary-General added that the organization is trying to convince the Taliban, directly and through the mobilization of the international community, that the presence of women in humanitarian activities is vital and inevitable.
He emphasized that the international community must put more pressure on the Taliban to change this situation.
