Intensification of bloody settlement of scores; Taliban shoot dead a former soldier in Takhar.
Continuing the targeted process of purging former soldiers by the Taliban, local sources in Takhar province report the killing of a former police soldier by the group’s forces.
According to sources, on Wednesday, July 30, the Taliban stopped “Rahmatullah” on his way home from the market in the village of Badam Dara, near Taloqan city, the capital of Takhar province, and then shot him.
Rahmatullah, one of the main residents of this village, served as a police soldier in Takhar during the republican era. He had sought refuge in Iran after the fall of the government at the hands of the Taliban; but according to sources, he had been expelled from Iran and returned to Afghanistan about 12 days ago. A specific motive for his murder has not yet been announced by the Taliban.
This incident comes as a wave of targeted killings against former soldiers has intensified across the country, raising growing concerns among society and human rights organizations. Despite the Taliban’s promises of a “general amnesty,” reports indicate that revenge operations against former security forces are continuing.
In the most recent similar cases, the father of a Taliban member shot and killed a former soldier in the same province. The continuation of such incidents has further fueled concerns about the growing atmosphere of insecurity, revenge, and public distrust of the Taliban’s promises.
