Local commander killed in clash with Taliban in Badakhshan

Local sources in Badakhshan province said that during an armed clash in Shuhada district, “Mawlawi Zaidullah”, a Taliban dissident, was killed.

At least four Taliban members were also said to have been killed in the clash.

The clash began after the Taliban surrounded the commander’s house and continued for several hours. Several Taliban intermediaries were also set ablaze in the clash.

Mawlawi Zaidullah had previously resided in Iran and had recently returned to Badakhshan.

Although the official reason for the clash has not been announced, local sources say that personal enmity between him and Amanuddin Mansoor, the Taliban commander in Kunduz, may have played a role.

The Taliban have not yet officially reacted to the inciden.
