Military Alert in Badakhshan; Has the Shadow of War Returned to Northern Afghanistan?
Reports indicate that preparations for opening new battlefronts against the Taliban have increased significantly compared to the past.
It is said that some regional actors, including Pakistan, have established contacts with individuals capable of organizing and leading small military groups.
At the same time, rising economic pressures, social restrictions, and widespread repression inside the country have fueled public dissatisfaction and pushed a number of citizens toward joining opposition fronts; a development that has heightened concerns about the beginning of a new cycle of violence.
Meanwhile, local sources from Badakhshan province report that the Taliban have intensified their military movements in border areas.
According to these reports, despite the transfer of some of the group’s forces from Badakhshan and Takhar to southern regions, hundreds of additional forces have been deployed to the Tupkhana border area in Zebak district.
It is also reported that in recent weeks a considerable amount of ammunition, equipment, and a Taliban Pashtun military unit have been moved to this area, while preparations for the deployment of further forces continue.
Sources say the Taliban are concerned about the possibility of opposition infiltration through border routes and, accordingly, have strengthened their security measures.
According to these sources, Qari Fasihuddin has recalled all forces of the group, including those who had previously been dismissed from Taliban ranks, in order to deploy them to border areas to prevent possible infiltration by opposition forces.
These movements are taking place at a time when observers view the overall developments as an indication of rising security tensions and the possibility of an expansion of conflict in the north of the country.
