According to an official document obtained by the media, the Taliban have significantly reduced the number of positions in the Ministry of Education in 1404 AH; from 389,000 to 299,000.
The Taliban have said that the goal of this reduction is to save costs and focus on important programs. However, the document also mentions concerns such as the fate of more than 35,000 employees and the possibility of domestic and foreign reactions.
Reports indicate that most of the eliminated positions were vacant or were filled by people working on a contract basis.
The document states that the Taliban Ministry of Education will pay the salaries of these people for three to six months after their dismissal, but this has not yet been confirmed. This is while schools and educational centers in Afghanistan are currently open only to boys.
The Taliban have closed schools to girls above the sixth grade. The plan does not specify the vacant positions, or whether these include female teachers. Currently, female teachers are housewives, although the Taliban claim to pay their salaries.
