No Safety, No Protection; Returnees of the Former Government Are at Risk of Assassination.
Tufan Waziri, former advisor to the executive office of the previous government, was violently and deliberately attacked this morning in front of his home in Kandahar.
Local sources report that the attackers beat him severely and fled the scene without any security intervention.
This incident once again demonstrates that even returning officials of the previous government in Afghanistan have no real security.
Waziri is currently receiving treatment at Aino Mina Hospital in Kandahar.
During the republic, he served as an advisor and spokesperson for the executive office and had to leave the country after the government fell.
He later returned to Afghanistan under a hollow promise and the invitation of the Taliban’s commission.
This attack is a clear warning that returnees, even under Taliban supervision, are constantly exposed to violence and direct threats.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and local Taliban forces have remained silent.
This silence reflects the group’s indifference to the safety of returnees and the complete weakness of their control over violence in their areas of influence.
This incident once again highlights the harsh reality of Afghanistan under Taliban rule: the security, rights, and lives of individuals associated with the previous regime are not guaranteed.
