One of Ismail Khan’s relatives was assassinated in Mashhad.

Ghulam Maruf Gholami, a prominent jihadi commander in Herat and a close associate of Ismail Khan, was shot dead in Mashhad, Iran, on Saturday.

Sources close to Ismail Khan confirmed that the attack took place in Mr. Gholami’s office on Mofateh Street in Mashhad. Iranian police have not yet issued an official position on the incident.

Gholami was the head of the Council of Jihadi Commanders in western Afghanistan and migrated to Iran after the Taliban captured Herat, along with a number of other Jihadi commanders. Before the capture of Herat, he fought alongside Ismail Khan against the Taliban in August and September 2021.

He was a prominent commander in western Afghanistan and had considerable influence among the Mujahideen, especially the Jamiat-e-Islami party.

His presence and activities on the jihadi fronts and his role in regional politics had made him one of the most influential figures in western Afghanistan.
