Pakistan, Russia agree to combat regional terrorism.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said that senior officials from the two countries have agreed to expand their cooperation in the fight against terrorism, especially in Afghanistan and the region.

The agreement was reached during the 11th meeting of the Joint Counter-Terrorism Working Group between the two countries held in Moscow on Tuesday, May 2.

The Pakistani delegation was led by Pakistan’s Special Representative to the United Nations Nabil Munir, and the Russian delegation was led by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin.

According to Pakistani sources, the main focus of the discussions was the increasing security threats posed by armed groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and ISIS. Pakistan has long expressed concern about the TTP’s cross-border activities, which are said to be carried out from Afghan soil, a concern that the Taliban rejects.

Russia also faces threats from ISIS.

The deadly attack on the Crocus Concert Hall in Moscow in March 2024, which killed more than 140 people, is a clear example of these threats.

The meeting concluded by emphasizing the need for adaptive strategies, increased bilateral cooperation, and collective action to ensure regional and global security.

The next meeting of the working group is scheduled for 2026.
