The Taliban, continuing their brutal policies, have publicly flogged two women in Jawzjan province for “illicit relations and running away from home,” in an incident that once again highlights the flagrant violation of human rights and human dignity in Afghanistan.
The Taliban Supreme Court announced on Tuesday, 2025 June 24, that the two women were publicly flogged 39 times in Darzab district and sentenced to three years in prison.
Just a day before the incident, the Taliban had flogged three other people in Kabul and Sar-e-Pul on various charges, including a man and a woman accused of having an extramarital affair in the capital.
While international human rights organizations have repeatedly warned of the increase in corporal punishment in Afghanistan, the Taliban continue to carry out these punishments, citing a strict interpretation of Sharia law.
Reports indicate a growing number of show trials and public executions in recent months, a trend that paints a dark and disturbing picture of Taliban rule in Afghanistan.
