Silence that legitimizes; Women Activists Warn of Taliban Normalization

In a meeting with Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, a number of members of the Afghan Women’s Rights Watch in Turkey criticized the ineffectiveness of global responses to Taliban policies.

These activists emphasized that international stances against the Taliban have often been “superficial, slow, and ineffective,” and some statements have even indirectly whitewashed the Taliban.

In their belief, such behavior reinforces the dangerous process of “normalizing” a group that violates human rights and effectively legitimizes it.

During the meeting, issues such as forced marriages, detention and torture of women human rights defenders, and forced deportations from neighboring countries were also mentioned.

In this meeting, Richard Bennett called the efforts of this organization in documenting the bitter realities of Afghan women important and promised support.
