Taliban Announce Detention of Two U.S. Citizens.
Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesperson, confirmed that two American citizens have been detained by the group’s security forces for violating laws and entering Afghanistan illegally.
Mujahid added that the case should be resolved through dialogue and legal channels but provided no further details regarding the charges or the detainees’ location.
Meanwhile, Adam Boehler, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, called the action “hostage-taking” on the social media platform X, warning that detaining foreign nationals, especially Americans, would have serious consequences for the Taliban.
He emphasized that Washington demands the immediate release of the individuals, with diplomatic and potential international pressure on the Taliban intensifying significantly.
This new tension highlights the sensitive issue of foreign hostages in Afghanistan and places U.S.–Kabul relations in a critical state.
Analysts warn that the Taliban’s handling of this case could have direct consequences on diplomatic relations, security cooperation, and international credibility. Any delays or unlawful treatment could provoke serious sanctions and increased global pressure.
