Taliban bureaucracy: A costly, corrupt and frustrating process for Afghan citizens

The Afghanistan Analysts Network has announced in a new report that the process of obtaining official documents in Taliban-controlled offices is extremely complicated, costly and fraught with corruption.

The report states that a large number of citizens are forced to go through long and difficult administrative procedures to obtain identity cards, passports, marriage certificates and other necessary documents.

The demand for these documents has increased significantly, especially after the increase in the desire to emigrate.

The report emphasizes that the Taliban’s complicated bureaucracy not only wastes citizens’ time and money, but also makes them vulnerable to widespread corruption, bribery and administrative irregularities.

According to interviewees, women face more restrictions than men; the male-dominated atmosphere of offices and the lack of easy access have made the process of obtaining documents more difficult for women.

Also, the reduction in the number of employees in the departments, long queues, costly commutes and irregularities have made this process exhausting for citizens.
