Taliban confirms shooting at protesters in Badakhshan; Governor: We did not have tear gas or water cannons.
Mohammad Ayub Khalid, the Taliban governor in Badakhshan, confirmed that the group’s forces fired at protesters in Khash district and said that they had no choice but to shoot to disperse the demonstrators, because, according to him, the forces did not have access to tear gas or water cannons.
According to reports, the shooting was carried out in response to people’s protests against the destruction of poppy fields and resulted in the deaths and injuries of nearly a hundred people, including women.
Although the Taliban governor did not directly confirm the deaths of people, he did not rule out the possibility of protesters being injured.
The recent protests in Khash are a continuation of the wave of popular dissatisfaction in Badakhshan; not long ago, residents of this province faced violent attacks by the Taliban in response to the destruction of poppy fields.
