The Russian newspaper “Nazvesimaya Gazeta” has reported that the Taliban Defense Ministry has received an unexpected invitation from China.

According to the report, Beijing has asked Mohammad Yaqub, the Taliban Defense Minister, to visit Beijing in the near future.

This invitation comes at a time when concerns in China have increased over the possibility of the US retaking Bagram air base and Beijing is trying to closely monitor security developments in Afghanistan.

The report added that Yaqoob’s visit to Beijing is likely to be for the purpose of consultation and coordination in military and security fields, and indicates China’s efforts to establish a direct channel with the Taliban.

Analysts believe that China wants to consolidate its relations with the Taliban, as well as to be informed about developments related to Bagram and possible US actions in Afghanistan, and to coordinate its policy in the region.

Experts also emphasize that China’s invitation is a sign of its concern about US military movements in Afghanistan and the retaking of the Bagram base.

Mullah Yaqoob’s presence in Beijing could be an opportunity to exchange information and coordinate on security and military issues, so that China can strengthen its position in the Afghan political scene and monitor the possibility of any US maneuvers.
