Taliban foreign minister meets with Syrian counterpart at OIC summit

Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaki met with Syrian Transitional Foreign Minister Asad Hassan Sheibani on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers’ meeting in Istanbul.

According to Hafiz Zia Ahmad, deputy spokesman for the Taliban’s foreign ministry, the meeting took place on Saturday, June 31, and the two sides emphasized the historical relations between Afghanistan and Syria.

During the meeting, Mottaki claimed that both countries had achieved stability and independence after years of war. This is the first official talks between senior Taliban representatives and the Syrian transitional government.

Mottaki had previously held talks with officials from several countries in the region, including the foreign minister of Uzbekistan, on economic issues and regional cooperation.
