Taliban security official killed in armed attack in Herat.
An anti-Taliban group called the Islamic Liberation Movement of the People of Afghanistan has announced that it has killed Mawlawi Hassan, the commander of the Taliban’s 10th security district, in an armed operation in Herat city.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, the group said its men attacked the Taliban official’s convoy in the 10th district of Herat city around noon. As a result, Mawlawi Hassan was killed and one of his bodyguards was wounded.
Medical sources at the Herat district hospital also confirmed the transfer of the body of a Taliban member and the wounding of another.
In recent months, the emergence and activity of anti-Taliban armed groups under different names have increased in various provinces, especially in the north and west of Afghanistan.
The latest attack in Herat is also being assessed in the same context and is a sign of the continued security challenges for the Taliban in urban and rural areas.
The Taliban have not yet reacted to this.
