The European Union has introduced a new special representative for Afghanistan in Kabul.

The European Union has appointed Gilles Bertrand, a veteran French diplomat, as its new Special Representative for Afghanistan.

He has worked in the EU diplomatic structure for more than twenty years and has experience working in various countries, including Afghanistan, Syria and Colombia.

Bertrand previously served as Head of the Political Department of the EU Delegation in Kabul from 2003 to 2004. His most recent position was as EU Ambassador to Colombia and before that, he was Head of the EU Delegation to Syria.

He holds a degree in political science and business administration from prestigious French institutions and is fluent in French, English and Spanish.

His new mission begins when Thomas Nicolasson, the former EU Representative to Afghanistan, ended his term in March this year.

Nicolasson had been in charge since 2021, and just two months after he began his mission, the Taliban regained power in Kabul.

Given his work experience in Afghanistan, Gilles Bertrand is expected to play an important role in the European Union’s policies towards the country.
