The Taliban arrested two people in Kabul on charges of dubbing foreign films.
Continuing the increasing pressure on the media and cultural freedoms, the Taliban Ministry of Imparting Goodwill and Preventing Vice has announced that two people have been arrested in Kabul for translating and dubbing Western TV series.
Saiful Islam Khyber, a spokesman for the ministry, wrote on the social network X on Sunday, July 27, that the individuals were targeted for “promoting Western thinking and culture through TV series” and “receiving financial support from foreign media.”
The Taliban have identified the two as “Naveed Asghari” and “Mushtaq Ahmad,” but have not provided further details about how they were arrested or their current status.
The arrest of the TV series dubbers in Kabul is the latest example of a wave of cultural repression under Taliban rule.
Since returning to power in 1400, the group has imposed extensive restrictions on media and artistic activities; from banning the broadcast of TV series to repeatedly arresting media employees.
Previously, a number of employees of a media organization called “Namarsana” were arrested by the Taliban on similar charges.
