Raza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of UNAMA, met with Mohammad Nabi Omari, the Taliban’s first deputy interior minister. The main focus of the talks was the security situation in Afghanistan.
The meeting was held on Thursday, June 1, and the two sides discussed strengthening cooperation in maintaining stability and security in the country, the Taliban’s interior ministry said.
The meeting comes as the security environment in Afghanistan remains fragile. A shooting incident at the UNAMA office in Kabul recently killed one person.
UNAMA reports also repeatedly point to an increase in attacks by Taliban opposition groups in various provinces.
The Taliban are seeking to establish an official face through diplomatic meetings, but the lack of real security has continued to worry people and international organizations.
