UN Security Council to hold second quarterly meeting on Afghanistan

The UN Security Council will hold its second quarterly meeting on the situation in Afghanistan in 2025 on Monday, June 23.

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Rosa Otunbayeva, Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, and UN Women’s Director Sima Bahos will present reports on the political, security, humanitarian and women’s rights situation in Afghanistan.

After the public session, a closed-door meeting will be held for consultative talks between Security Council members, the UN said.

This is the second quarterly meeting of the Security Council this year on Afghanistan. The main focus of the talks will be on the human rights situation, the humanitarian crisis, the international community’s interaction with the Taliban, and the role of women in Afghan society.

“Without the presence of the representative of the Islamic Emirate, the meetings will be incomplete and the decisions taken cannot reflect the realities of Afghanistan,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said
