The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) announced that in response to escalating security crises and Taliban militant attacks along the Tajikistan–Afghanistan border, it is sending weapons and military equipment to Tajik border forces.

This action is a direct response to armed groups and traffickers infiltrating from Afghanistan and the Taliban’s failure to control the border.

CSTO Secretary-General Talatbek Masadikov emphasized that member states, particularly Russia, have coordinated the immediate provision of arms and protective equipment, with contracts for this assistance in the final stages. This demonstrates direct Russian and allied involvement in managing the border crisis and countering Taliban threats.

The decision follows a series of bloody border clashes; on January 29, 2026, Tajik forces killed three Taliban members in Khatlon province and seized substantial weapons and narcotics. Previously, several Taliban members were also killed in border operations in Badakhshan.

Earlier attacks attributed to Taliban militants resulted in the deaths of five Chinese workers and the suspension of Chinese infrastructure projects.

This development highlights that Taliban claims of “border security” are merely a political façade, while the region faces a direct and growing threat.
