UNICEF: Taliban hindered effective aid delivery after the earthquake.

UNICEF announced that more than 1,182 children have died in the recent earthquakes in eastern Afghanistan, with children accounting for more than half of the victims.

The event left more than 2,164 dead, 3,428 injured and thousands of homes destroyed in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces.

The UNICEF representative said that children bear the heaviest burden, but the Taliban’s lack of effective management and the deprivation of women from work have seriously hampered the process of providing aid and health services.

In many remote areas, aid teams are facing serious obstacles, and children are left without shelter and necessary care.

She stressed that girls are at the greatest risk, from dropping out of school and forced marriage to being denied access to health services.

UNICEF added that despite the restrictions, it is trying to provide mobile clinics, cash assistance and support services to families, but the Taliban’s weak management is the main obstacle to effective assistance.
