US representative: Taliban not adhering to international obligations.

John Kelly, the acting US ambassador to the United Nations, said at a Security Council meeting that the Taliban have shown no signs of honest engagement and adherence to international responsibilities.

Referring to the Doha process and Washington’s skepticism about the Taliban’s intentions, he stressed that a group that continues to hold American citizens hostage and has not fulfilled its commitments to fight terrorism cannot be trusted.

Kelly added that the Taliban, with their restrictive policies, have prevented effective treatment of the recent earthquake victims.

He said that even female UN staff were not allowed to participate in relief operations, a move that has increased casualties and exacerbated the problems of the Afghan people.

The US envoy continued to call for the immediate release of all US citizens detained in Afghanistan and said that the Security Council must continue to hold the Taliban accountable.

According to him, the Afghan people deserve a better future and the UN, especially UNAMA, must focus its mission on promoting peace and security.

A few days ago, the US Special Representative for Detainee Affairs traveled to Afghanistan and delivered a clear and direct message from US President Donald Trump to the Taliban.

This message has seriously warned that the Taliban will pay dearly for continuing its policy of detaining US citizens.
