Taliban Impose New Restrictions on Women; Shopping Without a Male Guardian Prohibited.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Local sources in Nangarhar and Laghman provinces say Taliban officials from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice have instructed vendors selling women’s clothing and goods not to sell products to women who visit markets without a mahram (male guardian).<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the sources, the directive was issued in recent days during inspections of markets in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar Province, and Mehtarlam, the capital of Laghman Province. Taliban authorities reportedly informed shopkeepers that compliance with the order is mandatory.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A shopkeeper in Mehtarlam said Taliban officials warned that anyone who violates the directive will face four days of imprisonment, while the shop will be closed for two weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n
