US envoy’s third visit to Kabul; Sources say the Taliban are likely to deal over Bagram.
US Special Representative for Hostages Adam Bowler has arrived in Afghanistan on an unannounced visit, informed sources in Kabul said.
Meanwhile, the Taliban’s foreign ministry announced on Sunday that during the visit, a US citizen named Amir Amiri was released from prison and a delegation led by Buller met with Taliban foreign minister Amir Khan Mottaki.
This is the third visit of a US delegation to Kabul since the Taliban returned to power.
Sources close to the talks insist that the main focus of the talks is beyond the release of prisoners and that a possible deal over the Bagram base is also on the table.
Meanwhile, the absence of Zalmay Khalilzad in the US delegation has attracted attention.
Sources say the reason for his absence is that he had threatened the Taliban in a previous visit that the United States would take Bagram from them if necessary, even by force;
